Leathers The following are descriptions of types of leathers suitable for chaps. If you are trying to match fabric, I will have the leather company I use send you swatches of current hides. Time is of the essence since dye lots change. Choosing your chap leather first is the easiest, since there are more fabric colors available for show clothes. If you do purchase your pants & top first, I recommend a good color match before comfort. Nothing negatively catches the eye more than off color matches.
Top Grain Cow Available in 43 colors, 3 - 3.5 oz weight & can be used either suede or slick side out. The most durable of all the leathers.
Garment Cow Available in 26 colors, 1.5 - 2 oz weight & can be used either suede or slick side out. Women love this leather as it has a lot of give & is lighter weight than the top grain.
Garment Split Available in 39 colors, 2.5 - 3 oz weight with both sides suede. Somewhat stiffer than top grain, but has a beautiful clean nap.
Pig Suede Available in 44 colors, 1 - 1.5 oz weight with only the suede side available. Smaller adults or children can usually get by with this ultra light weight leather and the hides have a beautiful nap as well. I cannot guarantee them from tearing as they are quite delicate.
Lamb Skin Available in 39 colors, 1 - 1.5 oz weight with only the slick side available. This leather is only suitable for smaller adults or children. I cannot guarantee them from tearing as they are quite delicate.
Ultrasuede
Over 250 colors to choose from in weights of 6.43 oz per square yard to 11.1 oz per square yard. Ideally we would like to use the heaviest weight, but because the match to your outfit should be as close as possible, I may have to use the lighter weight but only when absolutely necessary.
Ultrasuede is durable, drapes like leather, is fade resistant, but best of all its machine washable! If your purchasing a light color or a color to match an outfit, I strongly suggest using ultrasuede.
Heavy weight ultrasuede
Available in 145 colors, in weights of 10.47 to 11.0 oz per square yard.
Lighter weight ultrasuede
Available in 127 colors, in weights of 6.43 to 7.8 oz per square yard.
